Mission

To produce world class trained and skilled Pharmacists for the improvement of healthcare delivery in Kaduna state, Nigeria and the entire world through teaching, learning, research, collaboration and development of medicines from medicinal plants particularly sourced locally. Also, promoting the use of natural remedies for prevention, mitigation, treatment and cure of diseases in our communities using locally sourced natural medicines mainly from medicinal plants.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The Department of Pharmacognosy and Drug Development at Kaduna State University (KASU) has a rich historical background rooted in the evolution of pharmacy education and research in Nigeria. Established to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in pharmaceutical sciences, the department has played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of drug discovery and development in the region.

Founded in response to the increasing need for specialized knowledge in natural product chemistry, pharmacology, and drug formulation, the department has continually evolved to keep pace with advancements in pharmaceutical research and technology. From its inception, it has been committed to fostering a multidisciplinary approach to drug discovery, drawing expertise from fields such as botany, chemistry, pharmacology, and biochemistry. Over the years, the department has established itself as a center of excellence in pharmacognosy and drug development, contributing significantly to the understanding of medicinal plants, their active constituents, and their potential therapeutic applications. Through collaborative research efforts with industry partners, government agencies, and international institutions, it has been instrumental in the identification and development of novel drug candidates derived from natural sources. Furthermore, the department has been instrumental in training generations of pharmacists and researchers, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to address the healthcare challenges facing the nation. Its graduates have gone on to make significant contributions to the pharmaceutical industry, academia, and healthcare sector, both within Nigeria and beyond.
